Vintage Clothing at the Braderie de Lille 2027: A Fashion Shopping Guide

The Braderie de Lille is one of the best places in Europe to find quality vintage clothing at low prices. With thousands of private individuals clearing out their wardrobes and professional second-hand dealers showing off their best pieces, the 2027 edition (4-5 September) promises some great fashion finds.
Why the Braderie is ideal for vintage
The Braderie de Lille brings together two ideal sources of vintage clothing:
Local residents sell the clothes of their parents and grandparents: authentic pieces from the 1950s to the 1980s, often kept in wardrobes for decades, in excellent condition and at rock-bottom prices. They are the ones who offer the real vintage treasures.
Professional second-hand dealers display sorted, cleaned and well-presented stock, at higher prices but with a guarantee of quality and authenticity.
The most sought-after vintage pieces
Coats and jackets from the 1960s and 70s: tweed, bouclé wool, straight cuts. French ready-to-wear brands of the 1970s (Kookaï, Cacharel, original-era Dorothée Bis) are highly prized.
Vintage denim: original Levi’s 501 jeans, Lee or Wrangler denim jackets from the 1970s and 80s. Check the inside labels: period details (the red tab, Levi’s buttons, batch numbers) help authenticate a piece.
Wool jumpers and cardigans from the 1950s to the 70s: often made of pure new wool, these pieces are very durable and are sold at rock-bottom prices by private sellers.
1960s dresses: short, geometric, in the synthetic fabrics of the time (nylon, early polyester). Highly sought-after pop art pieces.
Bags and leather goods: leather bags from the 1960s to the 80s, briefcases, clutches. The quality of the leather of the time often surpasses today’s production.
Vintage glasses: acetate frames from the 1950s to the 70s. A niche market, but the pieces are often original and very wearable.
Areas to target
The Wazemmes district and rue Gambetta: a high concentration of private sellers offering clothes at very low prices. You have to rummage, but there are plenty of finds.
The Saint-André area: a residential district where families clear out multi-generational wardrobes. Ideal for authentic pieces from the 1950s to the 70s.
Professional stands (second-hand clothes shops, vintage shops): scattered throughout the perimeter, they offer sorted and cleaned stock. It costs more but saves time for buyers in a hurry.
How to inspect a vintage garment at the stall
Look at the label: the composition (% of fibres), the country of manufacture (“Made in France”, “Made in Italy” up to the 1980s) and the brand help you estimate the period and quality.
Check the seams: on quality pieces, the seams are even and solid. Industrial pieces from the 1970s often have characteristic topstitching.
Give it a sniff: a persistent smell of mould or mothballs may point to problematic long-term storage. Professional cleaning may be needed.
Try it on if you can: some sellers let you try things on at the stall. Vintage cuts are often different from current standards, and sizes are generally smaller.
Haggling over clothes and planning your fashion route
Buying in bulk remains the most effective technique (“three for the price of two”), especially with private sellers who want to clear their stock. Politely pointing out a flaw (a missing button, a small stain) also lets you negotiate without causing offence, and on Sunday after 2 pm clothes sellers are the most eager to pack up.
To cover every style in one morning: Saint-Sauveur for streetwear and trendy vintage, Vieux-Lille for high-end vintage and accessories, then Wazemmes for low-priced bundles. Plan your route on the Braderie map. The rest of the year, clothes swaps and flea markets across the Lille area are listed in the Lille flea market calendar.
