The Braderie: the ultimate weekend away with friends

The Braderie de Lille on 4 and 5 September 2027 (dates announced by the City of Lille) is the perfect excuse for a weekend away with friends. Bargain hunting by day, partying by night, a big pot of moules-frites to share: all the ingredients are there for memorable times. But a successful group weekend needs planning. Here is the guide to keeping everything running smoothly.

Finding group accommodation

Accommodation is the first thing to book, and the earlier the better. City-centre hotels are full weeks in advance and prices are 50 to 100 per cent higher on Braderie weekend. For a group, the alternatives are much more appealing.

Airbnbs are the cheapest and most sociable option. A three-bedroom flat in central Lille costs between €150 and €300 a night over Braderie weekend, which works out at €25 to €50 per person if there are six of you. Look in the Wazemmes, Vauban or Moulins neighbourhoods, which are well served by the metro and cheaper than the Vieux-Lille.

Youth hostels offer private rooms with 4 to 8 beds, ideal for groups. The Gastama hostel in the Vieux-Lille is the trendiest, with a rooftop bar. The Stéphane Hessel, in the station district, is more traditional but very well located. Expect to pay €20 to €35 per person per night.

The ideal weekend itinerary

Friday evening: arrive the day before if you can. Settle into your accommodation, then head out for dinner at a Lille estaminet (a traditional Northern French tavern serving hearty regional dishes). Le Vieux de la Vieille, Chez la Vieille and the Estaminet du Kelders serve typical Northern cuisine in a warm atmosphere. This is the time to brief the group on the next day’s plan and get into the mood.

Saturday morning: get up early. Meet at 8 am to start on the Braderie while the aisles are still passable. Explore the Vieux-Lille and the Grand’Place together. Agree a lunchtime meeting point in case the group splits up.

Saturday lunchtime: moules-frites are a must. Book a restaurant in advance, or fall back on a street stall if you want more flexibility. Eating together is the highlight of the day.

Saturday afternoon: free time for everyone. Some will want to keep hunting for bargains, others will prefer to sit on a café terrace. Agree a time and place to meet for the evening aperitif.

Saturday evening: this is the big night. Start with drinks at your accommodation to save on bar prices, then head to rue Solférino or rue Masséna for the party. The metro runs all night, so there is no excuse for not getting home.

Sunday: a well-earned lie-in, then brunch and one last tour of the Braderie before heading home.

Budget per person

For a full weekend with friends, budget €100 to €200 per person all in. That covers accommodation (€25 to €50 a night), food (€30 to €50 for the weekend), nights out (€20 to €40) and a bargain-hunting budget (€20 to €50). Transport is extra, depending on where you are travelling from.

Tip: set up a shared kitty with an app such as Lydia (popular in France) or Tricount for shared costs like accommodation, groceries and group meals. It saves arguments when it comes to settling up.

Golden rules for the group

A few tips to make sure the weekend stays a happy memory for everyone. Plan some time together and some free time: not everyone has the same pace or the same interests. Set meeting points and non-negotiable times for meals and the evening out. Create a dedicated WhatsApp group for weekend messages. And above all, stay flexible: the best moments are often the ones you did not plan.

The Braderie de Lille 2027 with friends is the perfect cocktail of adventure, shopping and partying. Get the group together, fix the date, book the accommodation: the rest will follow naturally!
